Jefferson County Tri Area
Port Hadlock, Chimacum and Irondale

Port Hadlock, north of Port Ludlow and south of Port Townsend,is a commercial area serving eastern Jefferson County. The town is located at the entrance to Indian Island, where the Navy operates a major supply depot. Marrowstone Island beyond Indian Island is home to Fort Flagler State Park. There are a number of county parks for overnight camping and shellfish harvesting in season.

Port Hadlock, on the south end of Port Townsend Bay, is part of a community known as the Tri-Cities. The other two unincorporated areas are Chimacum and Irondale. These 3 towns are the commercial and residential hub of the central Quimper Peninsula.

Port Hadlock was established by Samuel Hadlock in 1886. The port at that time had a sawmill and timber business. Tall ships carried timber to other west coast cities.

The Old alcohol plant

The Old Alcohol Plant Lodge[pictured at top] really was an alcohol plant from 1911 to 1913. It was the Classen Chemical Company, a franchise of a French process to make alcohol out of sawdust. The plant closed in 1917 and sat vacant until Ray Hansen bought the Old Alcohol Plant in 1978, and set about the nine-year, four-million dollar task of turning it into a hotel and resort. The reception area of Old Alcohol Plant Lodge is a striking blend of old and new. Interior restoration was designed to preserve the original architecture-pillars, beams, skylights and the multicolored brick walls-with added fans, a tall fireplace and touches of natural wood.

Guest accommodations feature spacious, tastefully decorated rooms with either one queen size or twin double size beds; deluxe, two level townhouse suites with fireplace and kitchenette and a luxurious, two level penthouse with full kitchen, fireplace and private jacuzzi. The grounds are landscaped and the building exteriors have been modified with stucco and tile roofs, giving the resort an air of the Mediterranean. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Only at Old Alcohol Plant Lodge can you sail up to the marina, walk to the restaurant and register for a hotel room, all in the same resort.

On Indian Island, the Navy has an active base, and on Marrowstone Island Fort Flagler State Park is located. Port Hadlock has a public, county library and a public boat dock and boat launch. County parks are nearby with camping and public beaches.
