Bremerton
Bremerton, Kitsap Peninsula's largest city, is a Navy City, home of
the Navy's "moth balled fleet" and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
The USS Nimitz, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, was until late 1997
home ported in Bremerton.
There is ferry service provided by the Washington State Ferries between
downtown Seattle and downtown Bremerton. The car ferry service run takes about
one hour; the passenger ferry service is somewhat faster. See the schedule for
departure times of the ferries. A passenger ferry runs between Bremerton and
Port Orchard across the bay.
Near the ferry terminal is a waterfront park with a marina and visitor
attractions.There is access at the park to a navy ship.
Visit the Bremerton Naval Museum, located on Washington Street, one
block from the ferry terminal. Learn the history of the Puget Sound Naval
Shipyard and see naval artifacts, old photos and drawings, carved
bowsprits,instruments and ship models. Open Tue-Sat 10-5 & Sun 1-5. Closed
Mondays and holidays. Free.
